Relaxation of a Strained Elastic Film on a Viscous Layer
Experiments were conducted with SiGe film islands on a layer of borophosphorosilicate glass (BPSG). Initially the SiGe is under compression. Upon annealing, the glass flows and the SiGe islands relax by both inplane expansion and wrinkling. This paper provides a twodimensional (2D) model for inplane expansion. The results from the model are compared with the experiments with small SiGe islands....
متن کاملInstability of a compressed elastic film on a viscous layer
A flat, compressed elastic film on a viscous layer is unstable. The film can form wrinkles to reduce the elastic energy. A linear perturbation analysis is performed to determine the critical wave number and the growth rate of the unstable modes. While the viscous layer has no effect on the critical wave number, its viscosity and thickness set the time scale for the growth of the perturbations. ...
متن کاملWrinkling of a compressed elastic film on a viscous layer
A compressively strained elastic film bonded to a viscous layer can form wrinkles. The present study provides a theoretical model for the wrinkling process. The elastic film is modeled with the nonlinear theory of a thin plate subject to in-plane and out-of-plane loads. The flow of the viscous layer is modeled with the theory of lubrication. The interface between the elastic film and the viscou...
متن کاملWrinkling of a charged elastic film on a viscous layer
A thin metallic film deposited on a compliant polymeric substrate begins to wrinkle under compression induced in curing process and afterwards cooling of the system. The wrinkle mode depends upon the thin film elasticity, thickness, compressive strain, as well as mechanical properties of the compliant substrate. This paper presents a simple model to study the modulation of the wrinkle mode of t...
متن کاملRelaxation of compressed elastic islands on a viscous layer
A recent technique can fabricate SiGe thin film islands on a glass layer, which itself lies on a silicon wafer. The islands initially have an inplane compressive strain. Upon annealing, the glass flows, and the islands relax. The resulting strain-free islands are used as substrates to grow epitaxial optoelectronic devices. This paper models the annealing process. A small island relaxes by inpla...
